My ancestors were Roman Catholics in Poland. That means that their baptism, marriage, and
funeral records were all written in Latin. How fortunate for me that Latin was
the language of the church and the records were not written in Polish – a very
difficult language.
That's for sure. Now if I could just convince some people that Patricus or Bartholomeus are just the Latin versions of a name.
ReplyDeleteLatin was popular at that time
ReplyDeleteI have forgotten more Latin than I learned in High School. Use it or lose it, I guess.
ReplyDeleteLearning Latin did help with my English though, to figure out meanings of words on those tests we used to have to do to try for a job.
I love reading the Latin in the record. Now I am reading records in Polish - hard but not as hard as my ancestral Polish records in Russian!
ReplyDeleteIt is the handwriting that can make it difficult.
